What is this?

Wafer-Thin Books is a site aimed to support an informal monthly reading group hosted on Zoom by the creators of the Caustic Cover Critic blog and the Neglected Books website.

What is a Wafer-Thin Book?

A Wafer-Thin book is a book under 150 pages long. Generally. For our 2024 reading group, we chose books in the range of 100 to 150 pages, but those are arbitrary limits. A Wafer-Thin book is one you can read in an evening, perhaps two.

How Do I Join the Discussion?

The reading group will meet on Zoom the last Monday (Tuesday in Australia) of every month. We will announce each monthly Zoom discussion and provide the Zoom invitation via the mailing list. So please sign up for the mailing list (see right) to get the announcements and invitations.

How Did You Choose the 2024 Books?

We started with long lists of favorites, then decided to make a few hard choices. First, we are only including fiction, meaning novellas or short novels or nouvelles or long short stories, depending on which vague label you prefer. Second, we included at least one book from every continent except Antarctica, from the early 1800s to current day, and from male, female, and trans writers. Third, we tried to pick books that would be relatively easy and affordable to buy or borrow in all the countries where readers are most likely to take part.

Why Didn’t You Select <Insert your favorite wafer-thin title here>?

Because we are arbitrary bastards.

How Can I Encourage Other Readers to Read <Insert your favorite wafer-thin title here>?

We love to share reader recommendations. Send your favorites to editor@waferthinbooks.com. We will post them under the Other Recommendations category. But: please write something more than the title. Why do you love it? Why should someone else read it? How did it change your life/mind/worldview? And let us know if you want to be named or remain hidden behind the mask of anonymity.
